What surfaces does it stick to? Does it work on textured dashboards?

The suction base requires a smooth, non-porous flat surface to create a proper vacuum seal — this includes glass windshields, smooth plastic dashboards, desk surfaces, tiles, and mirrors. Heavily textured, soft, or porous surfaces (rough plastic trim, fabric, leather grain) will reduce or prevent suction. For best results on cars with textured dashboards, use the windshield mounting position instead.

How does the magnetic hold work — does it need a special plate on the phone?

The magnetic mount uses a strong magnetic core in the holder head.
